A mother drove her SUV into a group of climate change protesters blocking a road in California on Saturday, injuring four, it has been reported.

Thaneet Martin, 31, originally from Kent in the UK, drove her black 2017 Ford Explorer through a barricade of cardboard boxes and road barricades, according to Buzzfeed.

Three men and a woman were hurt, one with a leg fracture and two with minor injuries. All were taken to the hospital and were later released. One of the protesters also suffered a concussion and was hospitalized, according to Buzzfeed.

“A woman drove into a block of cardboard boxes,” said Dennis Waugh, a spokesman for the Placer County sheriff’s office. “She didn’t know there were people there and we had to unblock the road.”

Martin was arrested and later released on $15,000 bail, according to Buzzfeed.

She later tweeted: “I’m not being held hostage so cannot be in a cage. I’m going to have to see a doctor but I’m already sorry for what happened to everyone.”

Martin has four children aged eight months to 13 years, according to her Facebook page.

Martin, an activist, did not immediately respond to an email from the Guardian seeking comment.

Martin was photographed with a laptop on the far right of a group of 13 protesters, marching across traffic lanes, towing a sign that read “Build Bridges Not Walls” and which she took with her.

In an interview with CarNews of California, Martin said she thought her protest was “completely appropriate” and, in a statement to Buzzfeed, she called the incident a “setback”.

KOB reported: “Her friends hope for her, for her children, to do what she can so that her children don’t need to live in an underpopulated and finite world like hers does.”

A man driving a gas-guzzling pickup truck slowed down, then drove into the protesters, according to video footage from KOVR.

Another video shows a woman wearing fluorescent pink clothes and a hard hat walking into the SUV’s path as Martin blares her horn. Martin lost control of the SUV and crashed through a woman’s car, Buzzfeed reported.

The protesters are blocking the freeway entrance at Linden to protest against the road closures caused by construction to add a carpool lane. Drivers can now only take the exit at Linden to enter I-80.

Martin has since deleted her Instagram account, which showed several photographs of her with protesters, including one of her holding a large sign saying “not your enemy”.

In the following month, Martin attended a sea of climate change protesters in San Francisco, protesting a plan to auction off the Pacific ocean floor. “It’s a campaign to buy this fucking energy away from us,” she said.
