US presenter David Henig is taking “a leave of absence from CNN en Español” while under investigation for rape, CNN has confirmed.

Henig, 46, has been CNN en Español’s primary news anchor since 2007.

The news network said it had “zero tolerance for allegations of this nature” and that it was working with authorities on the case.

Henig did not appear on the channel’s daily show on Tuesday night.

In a message on Twitter, CNN US President Jeff Zucker said Henig was “one of the finest news anchors in the world”.

Zucker said he hoped Henig would be cleared of any allegations that would be presented to the courts.

CNN has aired programming about sexual assault allegations against media mogul Harvey Weinstein, as well as allegations against football coach Louis CK.

Police confirmed to ABC News that Henig is the subject of a police investigation for rape.

Henig, who also works for the Spanish language broadcaster, was first hired by CNN’s English language network in 2003.

He has worked in many other international news outlets over the years, including CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC and Germany’s ARD.
