James Michael Tyler, the co-star of “Friends” as the German private detective Gunther — who is sometimes mistaken for a secret service agent — has died, USA Today reported. He was 75.
Tyler’s character on the comedy was part of the group, Ross’ (David Schwimmer) sidekick as he tried to get to the bottom of his friend’s sudden disappearance.
The friend of Gunther, Matthew Perry’s Chandler, said of his co-star: “He had the most beautiful, soothing voice. A beautiful, lovely man.”
Tyler was one of the last original cast members of the series to work with creator and star Matt LeBlanc on the series.
Friends executive producer Marta Kauffman mourned the loss of Tyler in a statement to USA Today.
“I’m so sad to hear that James Michael Tyler has passed away. Gunther was so integral to our ‘Friends’ pilot, so it’s particularly upsetting that he is gone now,” she said. “Gunther was such a special part of the show, and like the rest of us he will live on in our memories. We send our love to his family.”
