At Fashion Week in March, Emma Raducanu attended a press conference in Paris to announce the new creative director for Dior — and actress Nina Dobrev was the one who hand-picked the Victoria’s Secret model for the job. A nice blend of traditional and high-fashion?
That’s how the fashion industry describes Raducanu, a dark-haired model who grew up on the outside of Mount Olympus, with silver-haired parents who are both Greek Orthodox and still keep to the traditions of their culture. The family is originally from Olympia, Greece, but moved to California when Raducanu was 6-years-old.
Raducanu describes the modeling industry as “very spontaneous” and said she loves the flexibility that it affords her. “If I had just applied myself to certain things [before], like saying yes to things, I might not have gotten the job right now,” she tells FOX411. “I know now not to say yes to things, because I’m way too young and I don’t know what I want yet.”
Dobrev was the voice behind the new Dior ads — which also feature model Alek Wek and actress Lara Stone — that feature the moody imagery of 1960s Paris, accompanied by the line “Autumn is beauty at its finest.” For Raducanu, it was Radocui who opted to direct the campaign’s first advertisement, and she says she was so happy with the result that she opted to offer her job to the model.
“I was like, ‘We can make magic,’ she said, “and for me, I’m at a crossroads in my career. So I was like, ‘Dacrit, don’t you want this? Let’s do it!’”
On Instagram, the 24-year-old called the experience “One of the best I’ve ever had. Thank you Emma, for always having my back. Beautiful ad.”
Originally from Los Angeles, Raducanu graduated from Cal State University Northridge with a degree in Economics. She modeled for Mercedes-Benz, Karstadt and Tommy Hilfiger before landing her modeling gig in Dior’s spring collection campaign.
Although she recently struck a deal with Disney that will give her the option to headline one of the studio’s blockbusters in the future, Raducanu says she’s still an actor at heart. (She had a small role in “One More Time,” the romantic comedy directed by Jesse Eisenberg.)
When asked about her dream role, she doesn’t hesitate: “I want to do what those girls do, like the evil queen in ‘Harry Potter.’ I wanna play her.”
The look on her face says she’s practicing now.
