Nick Kyrgios sure doesn’t want to play in China

Nick Kyrgios has an interesting take on the 2018 FIBA World Cup.

The Adelaide-born Australian had expressed interest in heading to the East Asian nation to participate in the event next year, but things changed on Wednesday when his country of birth was excluded from the current selection process.

Australia was not nominated to a FIBA World Cup, which takes place in China from Oct. 19-28, 2018, due to its lack of a professional league, while most of the other central and eastern Asian nations — China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam — have approved the tournament and have partakers in the current WTA event.

In a show of support for Kyrgios, who is ranked 48th in the world, some of the players came out to play alongside him during a doubles match with his new partner, Filip Krajinovic.

Kyrgios’ tennis journey has been spent on four continents, four Grand Slam tournaments and not winning a single set. He’s appeared on the court before in three different countries: Britain, Russia and France.

This can be explained as Kyrgios just loves to play tennis, and that will continue, not necessarily even in China, but right here in Australia — or perhaps not in China.

“This whole thing is crazy to me. I want to play there, but I’m not playing there,” Kyrgios said. “You never know, there could be a (Grand Slam). I don’t know. I really hope I’ll get a chance one day.”

Kyrgios told reporters that Australia and USA have agreed that the players will play in the 24-team WTA event.

“It’s a shame, because I went through so much to get picked for Australian Open (in January) and the Australian Open,” he said. “That’s a real thing and there’s no points. And there’s opportunities coming from the UK in 2018. This is like the first two months in (China) being a disaster. So it’s a loss.

“(But) what can you do? The Chinese have got great fans over there. I don’t know what they can do to try and influence FIBA to change their decision, but that’s what I’m trying to figure out.”

Kyrgios is ranked sixth in the world in men’s doubles, but was able to collect some career wins on the show courts during the Australian Open in January. The partnership with Jack Sock took him to No. 4 in doubles.

Boom.
