Renewable energy breakthrough as scientists grow tire grass in a lab

Welcome to grass made from old tires. It sounds like something out of a dystopian science fiction film, but in reality this experimental material from Carnegie Mellon University could be used to reduce carbon emissions in the very near future. Researchers report that they were able to grow the synthetic material out of old tires, by coaxing it into growing blades of grass. It even grows like nature, sprouting in mature piles. In fact, the material was even able to produce electricity using these artificial greenery.

This clever way of building native plant roots could potentially help reduce the amount of land needed to grow crops needed to generate electricity. It could also lessen the amount of carbon dioxide we contribute to the atmosphere by absorbing sunlight energy, which would then be used to generate electricity.

This is just the latest in a number of developments into “carbon plastic” technologies. Last year, farmers began growing “carbon sugar” out of converted plastic, which is edible. Another group recently spent two years studying a new way to recover and recycle plastic waste, which would then be used to manufacture new products.
