Emma Raducanu defeated Belinda Bencic, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, on Tuesday afternoon at the US Open to advance to the semifinals of the second major tournament of the season.
Raducanu, who lost in the third round of the US Open last year, will face a familiar foe in Garbine Muguruza, the No. 3 seed. The two have met three times this year, and Raducanu has been the only one able to win.
This was the first time in competition the two players have met each other at the US Open.
The match started under cloudy skies, with strong winds at times blowing over the Arthur Ashe Stadium court. Bencic was quicker out of the gates, breaking Raducanu early in the first set before cruising for a 3-0 lead.
Raducanu came back to take the set 6-3 and used three breaks in the second set to take the match.
Raducanu, ranked 53rd in the world, has won two out of her three meetings with Muguruza, including in the Wimbledon quarterfinals this summer.
She’s won seven consecutive matches this season and five in a row since her loss in the first round of the French Open. Bencic won last week’s final in Stanford to finish the season with a tournament record of 29-4. She has played in two Grand Slam quarterfinals (both at this year’s Australian Open) and one semifinals.
